Does chest pain and severe nausea go along with hiatal hernia?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I've been diagnosed with hiatal hernia several years ago and have GERD. I've been on omeprazole for 30 years. Lately I've been experiencing chest pain along with nausea. Whatever I eat bothers me. I sleep with bed elevated.

My doctor said I could be worse after surgery? Can anyone tell me what I'm experiencing is normal for my condition? Also, anyone have success with the fundoplication. (sp?)

The symptoms you describe could be easily attributable to reflux. The omeprazole has reduced the acid but not the reflux.

In a study of patients who had laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication 20 years ago 95% reported being satisfied.

I had the LNF some years back and it gave me my life back - off medication entirely and renewed energy.

Find a good surgeon if you wish to discuss it.

I have the same symptoms as you and more, I went just yesterday to see a doctor by the name of Dr Aye in Seatte, he works out of Swedish hospital, he is a specialists in this area, he told me surgery would help me, especially my breathing problem.

Many doctors are against this type of surgeries and I think because doctors that don't do many of them are probably not good at

it. Do your research and find a doctor that has done many

of these surgeries, if you are not close to Dr Aye. There is one called Nissan Repair and another called Hybrid Hill +Nissan Repair.

Some of these surgeries come undone from what I hear and

I don't know personally but percentage wise very few from when I asked the doctor yesterday. I am older and the doctor thinks I am a good candidate for this surgery. Important to get a

Thoracic surgeon. Hope this is helpful to you.

    Best regards to you

Does a thoracic surgeon do the fundoplication or is it a gastroenterologist?  I am in upstate NY. I am wondering if anyone in my area has a reference or any info for me.

Thanks so much for the response.

I also had this for years, it got to the point for several years that I had heartburn constantly, even just drinking water. I would get sick after going to bed and would feel like I had drank battery acid, it was so bad. I had the surgery in 2014, it didn't hold and had it again in 2015. I feel so much better and no longer take medication.

      Marie,

How long did the first one last? Did a gastroenterologist do the surgery or a thoracic surgeon?

I am glad you are feeling better and so good to get off the medication!

      Many blessings.

So sorry your healing is so prolonged. Have you spoken to others who've had it done? Hope your situation changes soon. Makes me nervous to have the surgery. How much time from work did you have to take off? It sounds like I wouldn't be able to get back to work for a while?

I'm retired so don't have to worry about work.  My symptoms seem to getting  better with time.  Eating small meals certainly helps.  I just didn't reLize that the healing process takes a long time.  Yes I've talked to others and the side affects all seem to vary.  My stomach still makes loud gurgling noises after eating but the probiotics I'm on are certainly helping the diarrhea.  Good luck with your surgery.  Val

I too had GERD and a hiatal hernia.  Yes I would get terrible chest pain.  I would relieve it by drinking something carbonated.  I was on the same meds as you for the GERDS but I still got bad acid reflux.  I had the Nissen Fundoplication surgery done in Oct so it's nearly 3 months.  My post op side affects have been nausea and diarrhea.  Ginger helps with the nausea and I'm finding a great improvement in my health by taking probiotics.  Ask your Pharmacist which is the best to take.  It's nice not to suffer pain and acid reflux anymore.  You just have to be patient with the recovery process which does take time.  Anything up to six months to get back to "normal".  Good luck with your surgery should you decide to go ahead....Val

My gastro doc doesn't want me to do the surgery. He says I am not "bad" enough for it. He was very arrogant today and told me all we had to do is change the meds. I asked him about food and other meds that could be aggravating things, he brushed my inquiries off. I am going to look for a new doctor. I am frustrated.

I am glad you are making some gains in your healing progress. I wish you the best.

My family doctor didn't want me to have the surgery either.  I asked for a referral to. Surgeon specializing in this type of surgery.  I tried many different medications but none of them corrected my acid reflux.  It seems to me that Physicians are against surgery but Surgeons support the procedure.  Good luck with finding a new doctor.
