Leaving mirtazapine

Hi all

After lots of research & input from you guys iv decided I'm gonna taper off mirtazapine ..

This constant fight with cravings at night is stopping me sleep even after taking a zopiclone. I feel like a ticking bomb at times ready to explode at the simplest thing . These cravings will never stop ..which means I give in & pile on the weight so I can sleep.. being on a contact diet & walking miles every day to keep it off isn't doing me any good. I'm ill every other week.

It's such a shame as this lifted my spirit so much not long after taking them.. any input would be great thanks x

Sharon, how long have you been taking Mirtazapine? I'm sorry you're having a hard time. You said it's making you sick every other week? What is it doing? My doc wants me to start on it but now I'm afraid to. I'm already not functional as it is and I don't want to make it worse or add to it.

Hia iv been taking it since December. Started on 15mg & then 30mg after 2weeks .it's was great for the 1st month best I'd been for along time..slept like a log ..felt quite bright. Then I noticed my weight gain 11 lb less than 2weeks on it..BT shrugged it off.thought not possible!! How wrong iv been on a no carb diet since then have to everywhere.. .. I seem to get a cold or flu every other week ..it's drainin. It's a constant battle in my head because of the cravings go & they don't go away until u give in ..stopping you sleep. I just can't do it anymore..every1 is diff but many the same over the weight problem. I had a relapse about a month ago & I blame this tbh .. Iv done research ..I wish I'd never taken it ๐Ÿ˜ข

sorry to hear Sharon are you gonna taper off then? I wished they had helped me but never helped with anxiety atall.ย  I started in Dec 2015 as well.ย  Went from 15 to 22.5 to 30 and now tapering wqent down to 22.5 for about 14 days and now down to 15ย  for 3 days.

I know it's a histamine blocker so maybe something to do with that.

If you are getting colds and flu often, then it may have lowered your white blood cell count. This can happen in some people. Sorry it hasn't worked out for you, but it sounds as though you have little choice but to taper off it. Just don't do it too quickly. Good luck.

Good for you!!! ย I'm doing so much better now that I'm down to a very low dose, and am looking forward to being totally off Mirtazapine - will be in 3 weeks, assuming that all goes according to plan (have been on a very long, slow taper). ย Best of luck! <3 smile>>

My GP is talking about citalopram as the next option Sharon. You can take it alongside mirt as you are tapering apparently and some GP's perscribe Cit & Mirt in combination so there's no need to suffer if you can adopt this approach. Get the cit working first before withdrawing the mirt and save yourself some pain.

Increasing mirt hasn't had any effect on me nor at the moment has decreasing and I still need something to deal with my depression which mirt has failed to do despite a promising start.

I too had a very promising start staz that's y iv kept at it.

wonder why she hasn't tried me on that before starting mirt.. she went for venlafaxine 1st bt cnt because of constant chatting to myself. To the extent I have to shout shut up. .mirtazapine has worked for that.. still chat bt not like I did. ..I was on sertraline for 3years before mirtazapine & before that many years on trazadone.. I also take 1000mg of lithium .for the bipolar.. mirtazapine for depression & insomnia. . My god I had to take zopiclone bcuz the sleep stopped ..

It would be worth asking the question Sharon. My GP wanted me to try higher mirt dose before trying cit but I should have just gone for the cit option and come off of the mirt when the cit was working.

Yer my gp said for me to go up to 45mg when I told him I cnt sleep .. I said no because of the munchies even though I felt in myself I needed a higher dose . I'm gona research this cit so Il no what I'm asking for .

Why did you think you needed a higher dose.ย  The higher the dose the less sleep.ย  The higher dose is for depression.ย  Hey Staz did your doctor ever think of Effexor.ย  I was put on Mirt to help with anxiety which is why it was raised to 30mg.ย  It seemd to get worse so now I am tapering down went from 30mg to 22.5 and now going down to 15mg.ย  The startng dose.ย  I really wonder how the doctors make the decision on what AD to try you on???

Because iv got anxiety & severe depression, I noticed a big change in myself plus wasn't sleeping again. I thought needed upping like you'd normally think on meds . My doc offered 45mg to help me sleep better also.. what a joke!!! Yeh iv often thought that too.. Iv had better treatment from a trainee

Snap Sharon. Can't sleep so increase the dose to 45mg when it's well known the sedative effects decrease with a higher dose. Go figure!!

They need retraining .. there's enough doctors that specialise in it ..drives me insane ..

are you on clonazepam as well if so what dose and how many times a day

Sharon, my psychiatrist said something about putting me on lithium because I don't want to be on any antipsychotic drugs if at all possible. With me also on the Paxil I can't go on another antidepressant . I hate Paxil!!! It's so hard to come off of especially since I've been on it for 15 years. As far as the lithium though, I don't have bipolar I have OCD which is an anxiety disorder.

Really .. I'd say with the lithium my moods have stablised.. that's what it's mostly used for . I still have anxiety which I find ad work better with. With lithium you have to have your bloods taken every 3months for liver kidney function & lithium levels . I cnt say I notice a massive difference with it tbh .. what's paxil ?

      You're welcome, Sharon.

Fortunately, I live in a state where marijuana is legal. ย It has helped me thru not only this Mirtazapine taper, but also thru several other medication discontinuations. ย My life was a disaster, and I feel that it was mostly caused by the meds themselves. ย For example, my sleep was awful - I quit Aricept and it improved greatly and almost immediately. ย As it turns out, insomnia is a very common side-effect of Aricept. ย Other meds that I was on caused lots of memory loss and confusion. ย The benzos they gave me (which bounced all around, in terms of how much and what was prescribed) caused terrible "rebound anxiety" and depression. ย Some of the withdrawals were tough, others were not. ย I'm doing the best that I've been in years, now that I'm off nearly all of these cursed meds! ย At one time I was diagnosed with akathisia - it was horrible - this is a medication-side-effect caused by many anti-depressants and the "atypical antipsychotics", e.g. Zyprexa. ย At one time I stood and sat on 10/second intervals for 90 minutes straight. ย Could not stop. ย These problems ceased when I got of enough of the various meds. ย Now that I'm off so many meds, my anxiety is much better - as is my depression. ย I still have anxiety, but it is much less severe now. ย I currently only need the marijuana to help with sleep.

      Just my experiences/opinions. ย

      Best of luck!

Oh I am only on Mirt and Clonazepam.ย  Akways went natural before this started 7 months ago.ย  Zopiclone never worked for me anxiety broke thru which is were the Mirt came into play for sleeping.ย

Zopiclone is good.. i havnt done any research but you have a great sleep no drowzyness feel fine alday ..only 7.5mg (smallest amount ever)

Yer the lithium is for bipolar ..have to have blood tests every 3months with that... Iv lost track what iv tried now . My head all a muddle with it. Got terrible memory with it all I need something that makes me feel a live without anxiety, doesn't forever make you put on weight (dnt mind at 1st used to that) & will help me sleep.. not alot to ask for is it .. been on them for 20yrs really thought I was onto a winner ..with this cocktail ๐Ÿ˜ข

So the lithium doesn't help with anxiety? Paxil is an antidepressant. It quit working back in July and my OCD and anxiety and depression is horrible. Still taking Paxil because it's very hard to come off of. My doc was going to use the Mirtazapine to help with my anxiety, depression and nausea.

I wouldn't say greatly no..that's why I also take mirt for the same reasons really.

go for mirt give it a try, it is worth it you will no in 3-4weeks if its for you. the change in me after a couple of weeks was great ..hadn't felt like that in so long. Didn't get that off lithium .

Yup that was the dose I was on and worked for a few days and then the anxiety during the day was bad.ย  So might not have been the Zopiclone but that is what the PDoc said.ย  He said there were better things for sleep out there and I got Remeron.ย  29 years wow mine issues have only started about 8 months ago and I have been fighting all the way which could be my problem.ย  I need to accept that this is where I am in life right now and accept that I will heal no more fighting.ย  Relax and go with the flow.ย  Get off the Mirt and move on.ย

You sound like my sister she is Bipolar and taking Xeffor and Clonazepam and some mood stabilizers.ย  She could not tolerate the lithium.ย

Hey if you find that something that makes you alive and you again let me know because that is what I am looking for.ย  Some days I get a glimse of her so I think I am close.ย  I am really hoping that the Natural Doc can help me get off these meds and I will be whole again.ย  smile

Yes you could give it a try I did and never had any adverse reactions which I had from the other classes of SSRI they put me on. You never know you may just be one of those people that it works for.

I thought think positive you have to work with the pills to make them work.. what a load of crap that was ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ my god I'm still on the pill that's made me so misrable since jan ..just because I'm not looking forwards to seeing the doctors face for 1 thing.. and for feeling like a bigger misfit than ever ..

Sick of the vicious circle .

Omg put zopiclone in the search bar .. I should never of got on this forum.. now I no why the doc prefers to up my dose to 45mg rather than a zopiclone. . Why don't they give you information on what your taking.. I can't remember most of my daughters childhood for taking trazadone either .. then a few years ago a man was on the news saying what sedatives do to your memory ..he can't remember his kids either .. it made me feel a bit better as I then had a reason .. but it's not on.

Oh kath we will get there 1 day we have too
